About tide-trek

Independent journalism rooted in public service, accuracy, and accountability

Our Foundation

tide-trek emerged from a simple observation: traditional news organizations increasingly prioritized profit over public interest. Advertising revenue dictated editorial decisions. Investigative journalism became too expensive to justify. Important stories went untold because they didn't generate clicks.

We chose a different path. From our founding in 2014, we established a structure that protects editorial independence. No corporate owners. No political affiliations. No conflicts of interest that compromise what we report or how we report it.

Newsroom collaboration and teamwork

Our Newsroom

Our team includes journalists with decades of combined experience across print, broadcast, and digital media. Former correspondents for major publications chose to join tide-trek specifically because of our commitment to substantive reporting.

We maintain bureaus in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. When major stories break in regional areas, we deploy reporters rather than relying on wire services or social media. Physical presence matters in journalism.

Editorial Standards

Every story undergoes fact-checking by someone other than the original reporter. Sources are verified through multiple channels. Claims require documentation. Anonymous sources are permitted only when their information serves clear public interest and can be corroborated.

We publish corrections prominently when we make errors. Our correction policy doesn't hide mistakes at the bottom of pages or in fine print. If we got something wrong, readers deserve to know clearly and immediately.

Investigative research process

Investigation Focus

Approximately forty percent of our editorial budget supports investigative journalism. These projects can take months. They require extensive research, document review, and source development. The financial commitment reflects our belief that investigation serves democracy.

Recent investigations exposed irregularities in local government contracting, documented environmental violations by major corporations, and revealed systemic issues in public services. Several investigations led to policy changes and official inquiries.

Reader Support Model

We operate through a combination of reader subscriptions, institutional partnerships, and service fees. This diversified model ensures no single revenue source can influence editorial decisions. Readers who value independent journalism support our work directly.

Commercial clients engage us for specific reporting or analysis projects, but these arrangements never affect our general coverage. The firewall between business operations and editorial remains absolute.

Looking Forward

The future of journalism depends on proving that quality reporting can sustain itself without sacrificing integrity. We're not trying to be the largest news organization. We aim to be one that consistently delivers accurate, important, well-reported stories.

Every subscription, every partnership, every project allows us to invest further in the journalism that communities need. We measure success not in clicks or impressions, but in impact and trust.
